Mission:

To make society a safer place by promoting and supporting sincere rehabilitation, Jewish Incarcerated Family Services provides assistance, counseling, and support to those impacted by the criminal justice system. Our comprehensive services extend to currently and formerly incarcerated individuals, as well as their spouses, parents, and children. Through a holistic approach that encompasses emotional, spiritual, and practical support, we empower individuals and families to transform their lives and reintegrate into society successfully.

The Background:

The United States has the highest incarceration rate globally, with approximately 2.3 million people behind bars. However, the current approach to incarceration falls short in reducing recidivism and addressing the root causes of criminal behavior. Instead of breaking the cycle of crime, incarceration often exacerbates the issue by hindering opportunities for employment, housing, and personal growth upon release.

Moreover, overcrowded and underfunded prisons lack the necessary resources to provide effective rehabilitation programs, perpetuating a system that fails to address the underlying factors contributing to criminal behavior. Research highlights poverty, lack of education, and exposure to trauma as significant risk factors, underscoring the need for a comprehensive approach that encompasses education, job training, and rehabilitation programs to reduce recidivism and promote public safety.

Jewish Incarcerated Family Services serves as an integrated support system, catering to the needs of incarcerated individuals and their families throughout every stage of their journey, from pre-trial to reentry and reintegration. Our trained volunteers and professionals establish long-term connections and provide emotional support, counseling, and spiritual guidance. By nurturing relationships built on empathy and care, we help individuals envision a better future, believe in their potential, and become contributing members of society.

Additionally, our focus extends to supporting the families affected by incarceration, as they face unique challenges and emotional burdens. Through counseling, mentoring, and a peer support group, we provide a safe and supportive environment for family members to share experiences, receive guidance, and foster healthier relationships. By breaking the cycle of incarceration within families, we contribute to the well-being of both incarcerated individuals and their loved ones.

We are driven by a belief in the inherent value and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their circumstances. See the links below to learn more about each branch of our activities.
